September 2026 Musing – Long Tails and Tales
A new record has been set in the Guiness Book for the longest horse tail. It measures 13 feet 6 inches and belongs to a mare named Jenny who lives in Spring Valley, Ohio. This is exciting to me because I learned about it from my farrier who happens to maintain her hooves. Then, later in the day, I was talking with my dog’s acupuncture vet who assisted as an official vet to certify the length of the horse’s tail based on specific criteria set by the Guiness Book.

As a word nerd, thinking about the horse with the longest tail makes me curious about long standing tales we carry with us through time. What tales do we hold in high regard like Guiness world records? There may be tall tales passed down through generations or simple tales that are moments of joy or pride in family history. There are cautionary tales that flow through time as well as tales of power and influence.
Today is the equinox, which is symbolic of equilibrium. The sun is positioned above the equator and there are equal amounts of light and dark. For people who align with the flow of energy in nature, it can be symbolic to look at how you are experiencing balance in life.
Consider what tales you are aligned with that help you navigate the world. Good advice, stories of success and family wisdom can be excellent sources of motivation and empowerment. The cautionary tales might be standing in the way of something you want to pursue.
Whether the tale helps you make space for more of what inspires you, or challenges you to clear space for something entirely different, it is simply a tale. There are elements of light and dark, risk and reward in all of the tales that we tell ourselves.
What is the tale you are telling yourself? Is it long and woven through your family history? If it doesn’t feel helpful, it’s only a tale. Change the story and tell a new tale that lifts you up and gives you a better sensation of balance in your day-to-day.
